I'm probably thinking of metal being a bit more of a strictly defined thing. I don't even consider at least the first Sabbath album metal. It's borderline and influential, but really just a bunch of blues rock with darker tones.

But I think I get how you look at it and I don't really have a horse in that race. I just personally think of certain musical properties when I think metal.
