how does everyone go about organizing stuff before diving into the meat

I never really did very much cuz I'm a dumb amateur but I've been definitely needing to and I really wanna get started on this new story. I'm confident in the content and have been mad brainstorming but if there's a storm in my brain it's obviously gonna cause a lot of havoc and confusion and the streets will be cluttered with broken pieces of thought.

In addition to that organizing the timeline is also killing me. I figure it'd be helpful to get things down somewhere and somehow so they're at least not intermingling with non-sequitur neighbors.
