I hear ya bro. I guess it stood out to me over a lot of the stuff that gets tagged as "synthwave" or retrowave, mainly because it's just a good modern pop album that explores other moods and ideas outside of "hey, we're on the set of Blade Runner".
And now that you mention it, I do hear some Stevie Wonder in that Kindo album. Along with a blatantly commercial take on Snarky Puppy and some of those other jazz outfits that appeal more to contemporary audiences.
