Just take Diamond Head, a band whose music and riffs helped to bridge 70s and 80s metal, and listen to their most famous song from 1980, and listen to Metallica's cover from 1983 and tell me Metallica hadn't changed something on a massive level simply by their attitude and their approach in a way that changed how metal was to be perceived from then till this day. The songs are the same, but somehow completely different.
