I’d be careful about this because you don’t want to be responsible for something that could lead to justifying a layoff. Everyone pretends to be busy at work whether they are or aren’t. Remember, people aren’t working to get work done, they’re working to keep their lights on.
Do you think maybe you could spearhead a new project or goal? Like maybe an outreach to help kids in juvie with their school work. Or maybe a nutrition awareness campaign or start a community garden. Or maybe you could prepare some kind of presentation you could give to school teachers just about abuse or poverty in general.
On teacher workdays we had people from the community come in and talk to us about what might be happening in the community that we don’t see.
Maybe all that is impossible. Do you think your bosses might be open to the possibility of you expanding your job description if you came up with a doable proposal?
