As far as I'm aware, the Movie doesn't have a full explanation. I watched it a while ago, but, after watching it again, it made a lot more sense ^^ especially the part with our flag melting into the cross.
More or less, he has a mental break down. Still even now the animation looks fantastic! Comfortably Numb is *the* best song ever, in my opinion. :-))
