I think we will get single payer eventually too. It's just a long shot right now. If a Democrat wins 2020 I will be shocked they manage to pass that through Congress. Especially Bernie Sanders.
Single payer polls well with Americans but the polls go down significantly when you remind them that taxes will probably go up. People want free **** and they don't want any sacrifice for it.
Adding the prospect of banning private insurance will just make it that much more unpopular and could potentially hurt the level of healthcare available rather than help it. There are rich.people who come here from places with single payer just to have the top surgians etc work on them.
It could also be ruled unconstitutional. It's akin to trying to ban private school so that public schools are improved. Americans don't like to be told what to do with their money.
