we can find lots of examples in the blues, r&b, rockabilly, punk and psych of the 60’s, glitter rock etc. but to me it starts with the Stooges. VU were still too Art school and subdued. Stooges was all about being a caveman burnout bashing instruments and harassing the audience.

Death get cited but honestly before that documentary they were just a band record collectors knew of. They had no impact outside of their area. The Stooges were playing all over, opening for massive bands.

We can spend all day sharing songs from the 60’s that were punk, even hardcore. These were all small local bands typically who got to make small press 45 “demos” so that record labels could see if they’d get airplay.
