It feels like an entire world separate from our own that is important and meaningful, with people inhabiting it that are worth our consideration, respect, and affection, with an expansive history to learn and take joy from. The medium of paper and ink is simply how we become aware of this world, and when your perception of that world transcends the paper and ink it ceases to be fictional and there are now two worlds in which you exist, or three worlds if you read both Marvel and DC. And with all the other comic universes out there there are as many worlds as are written, but the continuous worlds of Marvel and DC are the most pure forms of this expansive creationism.
