I think the sheer size of California throws people's perception of things off.
I talk to my mom (in Massachusetts) once a week and if she hears about anything wrong in CA she'll ask me about it.
"Did you hear about the fires near Sacramento?"
This is like me asking her if she heard about fires in North Carolina.
