I think a more accurate interpretation would be that they might have been
spree killers if they were a bit more deranged and separated from reality, but the example set by previous mass shooters gives them something to strive for they wouldn't have thought possible before with limited imagination and motivation, and the increasing alienation of modern society gives them that boost in nihilism they need to take the plunge.
