And maybe even further, but that's my opinion.

But the 90s is what's considered the 'golden era' because that's the era with the most nostalgia and influence behind it. Especially since the early 2000s is when hip hop started becoming commercial and more 'club' oriented. Despite hip hop's roots in being club music to have fun too and hip hop priding it's self in making money from the start people started hating on 'mainstream' hip hop at this point for 'selling out'.
