People don't like being reminded of how miserable they are especially in a setting like a party.
As goofy as that may seem to you it's no more goofy than when we wallow in our own misery out of some self indulgent fantasy that we're tortured geniuses.
Even worse is that you tried to find something to fit instead of using that opportunity to play the most obnoxious thing you can think of.
