Just from my observations that were a long time ago and don’t mean **** anyway because I was just a tourist but it didn’t appear to have the crushing poverty of places like India or the United States. As far as how much what happens in practice aligns with their official policy - probably not that much really. China felt a lot more aggressive and regimented to me. And from what I saw in China very brutal poverty was quite prevalent.

From what I read their economy has been going through rapid growth but they still lack a lot of resources. Despite that they have been lifting more and more people out of poverty in their country. So as a whole the country isn't as rich as most first world countries but their people aren't facing the same kind of poverty as most first world countries.
