Released in 2015, the first ep by extreme metal meting pot MOOM sounds like it was specifically designed to accompany a cathartic release from the objective conditions of the neo-global proletariat. Lyrics growled and bellowed by a female vocalist covering everything from existential despair, religious ignorance and the subjugation of women are accompanied by a backing band who wade in the murkiest waters of metal and punk's past and present with eyes peering out just enough so as to not be swallowed up in the chaos. Sludge and doom riffs set to blast beats are carefully designed so as to make the music as much about the rest of the body as well as the sound through all manner of headbanging and slam dancing. Song dynamics employ a Pixies/Nirvana-esque sensibility for loud/quiet transitions with the quiet moments typically leading to the track end as if the whole thing were some big train gradually coming to its final stop. The production sounds intentionally lofi, reminiscent of the chaotic frenzy of the best of early American hardcore while leaving enough breathing room for the guitar phrasing and drum techniques to satisfy any metal purist. At the end of the day, the ep ends up being as good an introduction to extreme metal as more commercially successful acts like System of a Down or Korn were to many. Highly recommended.

Track pick: "Cages" is as great an opener as any with it's Camus inspired lyrics and meaty riffs.
