I heard Oliver Thorn from Philosophy Tube say this on a podcast about British politics and I think it's totally true in America. People don't like to hear that politics is life and death. People like to treat it as a casual hobby and therefore being mean about it is uncalled for. Even if the president isn't doing the best job about the pandemic that isn't any reason to incite meanness over it. It's not like the status quo we all love and worship so much could ever be so perverted that our elected leaders could literally be choosing to let us die for their own personal benefit after all. No, it's all just differences of opinion and that's that.
