I know I cite this guy all the time but his story is worth understanding.



The important thing to grasp is that this is by many accounts the ideological forefather to Al Qaeda and his reasoning wasn't even nearly just "**** Western imperialism." Obviously he did oppose imperialism but not necessarily for the same reasons you might. He resented Western influence because he regarded it as decadent and secular, AKA anti Islam.

Not only did he oppose it in his home country but his views were cemented when he lived in America for a few years in the 40s and found Western culture to be utterly decadent, materialistic, racist and hypersexualized.

I'm sure there are certain parts of his objections some of us can even sympathize with and see as valid. But fundamentally there is a certain rejection of modernity, very similar to fundamentalist Christians in the US which makes it hard to imagine that all this extremism is just down to foreign policy.
