Yeah, actually
Braxton used to show up barefoot and with his German Shepherd
at the record store I used to get a lot of stuff at (Rose Records on Wabash Ave. in Chicago).
I never talked to him in those days, but one day a few years later (I think I was about 13),
he came into the Jazz Record Mart (when it was on Lincoln Ave.) with a friend
who had just finished some LP cover artwork (I think it was for the
Braxton/
Jarman album "
Together Alone"). While at the front counter, they were
trying to remove the artwork from some kind of big sleeve and fumbled it.
It almost hit the floor, but I was there to catch it. So, it was a good time to go
into my "Oh Mr.
Braxton. I love your work ... (blah, blah, blah...) ... I started
playing saxophone after hearing "
For Alto" ... (blah, blah...) talking about my
drum lessons with
Steve McCall, and so on. He was very cool then. Always has been.
We've talked a few times since. He even has music scores of mine in his library.
