Religion as a whole only ever seems to be surpressed in authoritarian countries that have their own dogmatic doctrines they require the populous to buy into, which they feel is subverted by deviant religious and ideolgical tendencies. So those doctrines act very much as a sort of state religion... Especially since the doctrines of said societies are usually based on the premise of some utopian vision.
In every other society, religious suppression only ever happens on behalf of one religion against another religion or set of religions.. IMO state atheism is no different in this regard.
