Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) signed a law on Thursday making it a hate crime to make police officers the target of abuse. Critics of the legislation argued that adding law enforcement personnel to the list of groups protected under hate-crime diluted the meaning of the statute, and was not necessary to protect police. The Republican author of the bill, Rep. Lance Harris, said it gave officers "an extra level of protection" in the face of "a deliberate campaign to terrorize our officers."
