I'm not trying to justify that statement, but he was really drunk when he said that, and Clapton has been strongly influenced by black musicians like B.B. King or Buddy Guy, so what he said doesn't make any sense, taking into account the numerous covers he did from Bob Marley or Robert Johnson (probably his biggest influence). So I'd say he made a very big mistake, but didn't really mean what he said, in my opinion.
