^ those quotes sum it up very well. It's all even more heartbreaking because in the way she talks you can hear the pain, but you also hear someone who's battling the feeling that she doesn't deserve to stand up for herself, coming from the abuse she's been through. The way she keeps asserting she deserves to have a life in that defiant but humble way, nobody should have to feel like that's not something you can take for granted.

This even comes up in a famous Dutch film, Spoorloos, which I'm sure you've seen and if not, you really must.

I haven't seen Spoorloos actually, I was prejudiced against it because it's adapted from a book by Tim Krabbe. I haven't read it, but I tried another of his books and thought it was no good. But of course that doesn't mean the film can't be good, now I feel like giving it a try
