i suspect St. Anger turned out the way it did due to the fact that James and Lars fought almost constantly during the early days of its creation.
that on top of James entering rehab for alcohol issues.
also, James and Lars' decision to completely exclude guitar solos entirely (for some utterly bizarre reason), upsetting Kirk (who had tried to be the voice of reason up to this point) in the process.
the documentary Some Kind of Monster shows just what a mess St. Anger's production was.
someone earlier mentioned they felt it very much appeared to be a knock-off-attempt at copying System of a Down...........and i'm somewhat inclined to agree.
