I am a tremendous fan of Low's work. I began with their complete album chronology digitally including the Lowfits live sessions, then bought the
Lifetime of Temporary Relief CD box set, and I tracked down all of my favorite releases on wax. On vinyl I have
C'mon,
The Great Destroyer,
Trust, and an original Kranky pressing of
Things We Lost in the Fire with the etched lyrics on side D.
I adore the haunting fragile quality of their early efforts, and was won over to their re-invented sound on
Destroyer with highlights like, "Cue the Strings" and the powerful, "When I Go Deaf."
C'mon became my favorite of their albums with "Especially Me," "Majesty / Magic," and my all-time favorite Low track, "Nothing But Heart."
But that's where I left them behind. I briefly sampled
The Invisible Way and
Ones and Sixes but nothing stood out as strongly as cuts from their prior LPs, and the gritty distortion of the
Double Negative promos turned me off completely.
Am I missing something? Are there still cuts featuring the delicate but powerful dynamics like the tracks I know and love present on
Double Negative and
HEY WHAT? Or does their newly-adopted inorganic overdrive distortion dominate these records?
