This post will be a bit different from the usual ones.
UNIVERSE – MR LENNON
So Universe was a band led by Mirosław (abbreviated to Mirek) Breguła. Apparently they were pretty big at the start of the 80s in Poland. They didn't make much impact though, and honestly they were mostly incredibly bad.
But there's this song that my dear friend
The Lizard showed me. The amazing thing about it, it's actually pretty good musically speaking, and Mirek is really emotional singing this.
But the lyrics - and his singing - are so damn absurd and un-poetic in polish it's absolutely terrifying.
Still, I find it a nice song to listen to sometimes, when you feel nostalgic about John Lennon and want to connect with someone for whom - Lennon was apparently an idol.
The song was written in 1981-1982, around the time Lennon was murdered (an event that deeply hurt Mirek), and it was first performed (and recorded) during the 1983 Opole Festival (the biggest music festival during the communist rule in Poland, which I believe I mentioned already in this thread):
You've lived for so many days
You gave him your autograph just to
Leave
To then meet him again one day
As much as five bullets hit you
To inflict this deadly pain
To silence this voice,
That we know could've still sung
That could've resonate
And give people the joy to live
Who knows? Who knows?
What novelty could you've played?
Millions of broken hearts!
Covered themselves with bereavement
Asking: who actually dared?
Your Yoko will never again
Listen and awe
At your words
From now on, you'll never sing to her again
But the Myth
The Myth of John
Will live on
Your voice
Your style
Inspired so many of us
Johnny!
The world calls out to you
I call out to you
Johnny!
Was this really supposed to be
The end of your days?
You idol of sensitive hearts
Your fan worships/remembers you
Waiting
Till he'll meet you up in heaven
I won't cry - It's too late for tears
The world's too cruel anyway
It kills
Mercilessly diffuses death
So how is Peace supposed to last on it?
Does someone know?
Does someone know?
Whether it's worth to live on?
Johnny!
Johnny, tell me am I forced to stay here alone?
No! No! Naughhhh...
Johnny?
Can "Give Peace A Chance"?
Still make sense?
The ****ed up thing about this song
That it turns from "Cheesy song about mourning after John Lennon" to "Suicide Note Because Of The Death Of JoHn LeNnOn" in a matter of seconds.
Like suddenly after 2min, or so, of campiness and silliness, his performances actually weirdly captivates you. Like: "
wait? This kid had really ****ing loved John Lennon. Don't I feel the same about certain things? Isn't there something about those certain Ideas and Ideals who one projects onto the world? Do I actually hold an ideas about life? Couldn't I feel the same pain, if one of my projected symbols of life would've been broken? Abruptly destroyed"
Yeah, nevermind...
...It's just that...
if not for the silly lyrics, this would actually be quite an amazing song.
Too bad they only got that one song.
They seemed like boys with potential.
