I had several when I was younger. Proper Sony ones, also others. Cheaper models, and then one state-of-the-art one which had auto reverse! Wow! I also had one with a recording mechanism in it, one with a radio (which I never used) and one that was silver and no larger than a pack of cigarettes. They were great for their time, but of course you were limited by recording techniques, so while the music sounded great, it wouldn't have satisfied one of our audiophile friends.

They were relatively cheap too - I think in the 15/20 quid mark, less than you'd pay for a CD today - and most of them were damned tough. If you dropped them, your only real concern would be that your tape was all right. I don't think any of the ones I owned ever suffered any structural or mechanical damage. They were built to last.
