The only situation where that would be understandable would be if the artist/band achieved overnight success and amassed a lot of new fans - something that would probably annoy most long-standing fans who had been supporting the artist/band at the start.
With Radiohead, success was gradual. However, when everyone and their dog started name-dropping the band, when asked about the music that they enjoy, it became woefully clichéd. Did I stop listening to
The Bends? Nope, but I wasn't going to sound like a bandwagon jumper either.
