Well, taking into account that many of these artists, back in the day, were on unemployment benefit, squatters and/or strapped for cash, comparing now and then is like apples and oranges.
I can't recall a single interview or biography where a band or artist had spontaneously purchased a 4-track. Most had to save-up for one (brand new or second-hand), while others borrowed one from a friend or contact.
Accessibility, in all respects, was far more limited back then.
