Yeah, Frusciante works with Flea better than Navarro does. Navarro's guitarwork on OHM is quite psychedelic. I like Navarro, I just prefer Frusciante.
But BSSM and pre-BSSM albums are awesome for basswork as well. Check out Stone Cold Bush - cool bass solo. It's just not really fair to judge Flea on By the Way. It's like judging Trujillo on Bob Rock's basslines.
