Is this tune in B flat? (my online keyboard seems to think so.)
Not a pro, but I think the bass plays 'pedal point' i.e. remains on a certain note (in this case the lower 5th, F) whilst the others jump around the tonic B flat, and the brass then sometimes resolves on F like it's the tonic. Funky. And the Hammond is crawling around the 4th (E flat) and major 3rd (D) like a funky spider.
Perhaps Dave Grusin, Alan Silvestri, Bob James were doing this kind of stuff in 1977-1980.
