2021 War of the Worlds.
Caught it just starting and thought, what the hell? Turned out to be pretty decent (better than the 1950s version and far better than Cruise's effort anyway) - big budget without big stars (never heard of any of them), set again of course in America (sorry HG, nobody cares about Victorian England it would seem, other than Jeff Wayne). But what really made it was they used actual (so far as I could follow it) decent science, and used that as the plot device whereby the Martians were defeated. I'd have to say it was enjoyable. Plus the lead scientist was female, and was able to out-think all the men. Definitely a few bad points - abrupt ending without enough of an epilogue, two characters at the end just vanished after a subplot about their mother being in a nursing home was floated - but overall I'd have to say 2 hours not wasted.

Oh. Not to be confused with the mini-series starring Gabriel Byrne, also released in 2021, also very good.

But not a movie.
