They definitely tried it.

Elph is right in that Smashing Pumpkins were one of the greatest '90s bands. Batlord is right in that Corgan is a dick. Here's an example, perhaps not the best, but an example nonetheless - Corgan has a serious ego. He's a smart guy, but damn he's kinda full of himself - his production efforts [in some vain attempt to take complete control over the sound of his music] have just been a disaster - I've seen them live twice, both times were great shows, but Billy thinks much too highly of his recent material:

But damn, at their peak, they recorded some beautiful music - that's my teenage years right there, nostalgia encapsulated and forever solidified:

Alice in Chains definitely don't suck, they were a great band. Too bad heroin wreaked hell on Layne. Don't think they ever tried to play or be "punk" - they were more of a metal band in their sound.
