After selling a frenetic 7" punk single from the boot of Karl's car in Cardiff in 1979, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde formed a new wave synthpop outfit named with an unpronounceable squiggle, later rebranded as "Freur" to facilitate marketing. They had a minor hit with "Doot Doot" in 1983. In 1985 they scored Clive Barker's Transmutations aka Underworld and adopted the alternate title as their new band name.

They released two synthpop albums to minor acclaim as Underworld MkI before Darren Emerson joined and they began producing proper progressive house music. Underworld MkII's first album, Dubnobasswithmyheadman received great critical praise and the band became a household name after being featured on the Trainspotting soundtrack with their non-album floor-stomping b-side hit, "Born Slippy.nuxx."

The rest is history.
