I was surprised to learn that there's a movie about Mario Bros, because the characters of the original game are so -quite literally- two-dimensional.
A spin-off like this suggests to me that the demand for entertainment has outrun the movie industry's ability to come up with decent ideas. Didn't the same thing happen decades ago, when the mildly-amusing, strictly-for-kids cartoon, The Flintstones, was turned into a movie franchise ? The result: top-heavy movies, loaded down with all the trappings of adult movies, but built around a flimsy core of nonsense that just can't keep going for 90 mins.
