I usually find it helpful to mix theory with listening of just using one way all the time. I begin with the chord shape then figure out the root, the third and the seventh to see what each note is doing. After that moving the notes around usually shows me ways to play the chord without trying too hard. Checking the chord progression in different places on the instrument is also a good way to hear how the way the notes are arranged changes the feeling, without changing the harmony.
