I'd say proto metal (or old metal) bands would include.

Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
King Crimson
Blue Cheer
Queen
AC/DC
Blue Oyster Cult
Uriah Heep
Hawkwind
Aerosmith
UFO
Jethro Tull
Thin Lizzy
KISS
Rush

All have had some kind of significant influence on heavy metal in both it's early development and following the 70s.
That's a pretty comprehensive list.

I'd probably add Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes to it. Psychedelia (specifically acid rock) contributed a fair bit to heavy metal - in fact, bands like the Amboy Dukes, Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly and Steppenwolf etc were often listed as heavy metal bands.
