Black Flag - they got me into hardcore and 80s punk music, which i now like a lot more than most modern punk. I love greg ginn and his excellent guitar riffs and wild, sloppy solos. Theyre one of the few bands who's whole discography i truly enjoy - i even love their instrumental work, and also their collabaration with the minutemen. Theyre probably my favorite band of all time.
Dead Kennedys - Jello's vocals took me some time to get used to, but i fell in love. Fresh Fruit is one of the most consistent punk albums in my opinion. Guitar riffs like the ones in Man With the Dogs and Soup is Good Food - how can you dislike this? I love how cynical they are.
Against Me! - like most people i think, against me were the first folk-punk band i heard. The intensity of the vocals, the great lyrics, the sing-along choruses and the folky edge of their early stuff was exactly what the stale punk scene was needing at the time - a fresh new sound. And man, what a live show. Lots of folk-punk bands are springing up now, and for me its the most exciting thing about punk today, by a long distance.
Minutemen - i actually only got into this band recently, just after i joined this forum. But they blew me away. Theyre the most diverse punk bands ive heard, with lots of funk, and other styles like jazz, blues and folk used occasionaly as well. Theyre so talented - D Boon has some amaazing solos, and Mike Watt is probably my favorite bassist of all time - it seems like every song has a kicka,ss bassline. They are unique, but they are perfect at what they do.
And I completly agree with what youre saying about Refused. Such an amazing band, even though i also didnt like them at the beginning.
