A great solo can add a lot to a song, but not having a solo doesn't take anything away from one. I used to listen to a lot of thrash metal and I loved the lightning-fast guitar solos in every song, but I eventually came to recognize their banality and worthlessness. Putting a guitar solo in a song for the sake of having a guitar solo in the song is a bit ridiculous. So many thrash musicians seem to believe that it's imperative for every one of their songs to have a guitar solo in it, whether or not the guitar solo encompasses any sort of emotion.

An album packed with guitar solos that append nothing is much worse than an album with no guitar solos.

I wouldn't really class St Anger as a metal album.
I'd love a good explanation as to how St. Anger is not a metal album.
