Bull, they are. Break us down and we become cells, break them down and they become proteins. Scientists can create proteins out of thin air with the right conditions - conditions which we believe have been present in the history of the Earth. Those proteins bind to form DNA and simple cells such as the amoeba. Cells are constantly changing (if you look at things over billions of years) and so millions of mutations crop up. Millions of those die, but some flourish because they're good mutations and useful mutations. Tune in billions of years later and meet humanity, for want of brevity.
