Well grunge is a little different from most punk, you're right... More classic rock influence, etc.... But it's more of a movement than a genre anyway, and Nirvana certainly played a very big part in the latter movement, as well as breaking it into the mainstream.. But thats what led to Grunges downfall.

If it remained underground it would likely still be around today... But people who are gonna bash the hell out of Nirvana for that sole reason are idiots, as are people who bash Nirvana for popularizing Grunge in the first place... Bands get popular, it happens, they have no controll over it.... Listen up kiddies, you may not like the fact that Nirvana were one of the most popular bands in the 90s, but they just were, media played a part sure, but a lot of people just loved their music, which if you're a indie kid, makes them BAD obviously, now you can resume to listening to your Bright Eyes records but first stop comparing Kurt Cobain to Hitler, it's getting old.
