The program I've got allows you to put in a few instruments. Its only really useful for drums and basslines, but its a start.
Beyond this you definitely need:
1. A microphone to put the voice through. Mine would probably cost £15-20 if I ebayed it now.
2. Guitars, if you want guitar backing. Computerised guitars don't sound like guitars. Computerised drums and bass and keyboards can be pretty realistic though.
The mixing desk makes the sound clearer and louder, but you can still get enough for a song without anything amplifying the signal before it gets to the computer.
In other words, if you just want to rap or sing to drum and basslines, you can get away with just a mic and a recording program. If you want guitars, then for a basic sound you can just use a cheap acoustic and put it through the same mic you use for the vocals.
