Did you really expect him to go on Letterman and say "I'm deeply sorry, but those guys were ******s and I'm a racist"?
He's a public figure, he was speaking in front of millions of people, he had no choice but to deny the fact that he is a racist. Mel Gibson also stated he wasn't anti-semetic, but previous actions say otherwise.
