Between 1989 & 1991 the focus moved away from hair metal and on to bands like The Chili Peppers , Faith No More , REM , Janes Addiction and all that lot.
Grunge didn`t kill hair metal it died from over exposure, Grunge mearly kicked the corpse while it was down. You don`t see people claiming emo killed grunge in the past few years , because it didn`t.

While those bands may have been the future of new rock and roll, none of them had the almost immediate impact that Nirvana did on the US after they finally released a record on a major label.
