Well, like IHM said, I think the #1 reason people turn to alcohol is to escape their problems. Also, people whose parents were drinkers are more likely to drink. So, in my mind, a lot of it comes down to people not knowing how to deal with their problems, and being out for instant gratification. That, to me, is probably the most underrated factor in determining a person's happiness in life-if you can learn delayed gratification, then you are well on your way to becoming a happy, successful person. However, that is mostly learned in childhood, and since my parents taught me the right way, I ought to be a little more empathetic to those who weren't. The really sad thing is that a lot of people who were mistreated by their parents, when they were young, would feel like they were doing an injustice to them, if they were ever able to break through to happiness.
