Music today is marketed, and it's being whored out to all the people who are so willing to accept mediocrity because it's easy. Most of the mainstream fans don't care for the musicianship, so long as, and I quote my dad and half my family, "It's got a good beat and I can understand the words." Some bands take advantage of society's ignorance and play simple riffs with pseudo-lyrics that people find "deep and intellectual" and make millions off of them.

SO if you're ever in a period of unemployment, gather 3 other guys who have partial experience with their instruments, write songs about wanting to kill yourself because your toaster burnt your past piece of toast, record it, and then send it to some big record conglomerate. Sure, you'll be selling your soul and every shred of dignity you have, but who cares? YOU'LL BE RICH!
