The film works on two levels-
The fantastical world a child retreats into from life.
The franco regime in spain circa 1940.
The whole point of the film was too juxtapose these two worlds. The violence is neccessary in order for the child's journey to have real purpose (i.e her mothers health)
An amazing film and was so pleased to see it in the cinema
