Although pop music has (in the end) won the war, Nirvana (helped) get us out of the crazy sounds of the 80's.
Yes, and into the great sound of the 90s! As I said earlier, Nirvanas influence on mainstream music was something the world could've done without. We have them to thank for all the puddle of muds of the world.

Thirdly, not many of the fans of the original grunge sound like Nickelback or post-grunge of any kind (I know I sure don't!).
What are you talking about?

YouTube - NICKELBACK - Figured You Out

YouTube - Nirvana-In Bloom

Very similar, i'd place those in the same genre.

Last, Cobain had a unique voice all his own. Compared to many artist of today, he was extremely unique. His lyrics are often cryptic, so boneheads can't understand them (Something he himself admitted in the song "In Bloom").
They're not that hard to understand, Kurt Cobain was a pretty literal lyricist. He was not a good lyricist, just because he uses fragmented sentences doesn't make them 'cryptic' and if whiny singing is 'unique' then okay, he was a very 'unique' vocalist.

Cobain was extremely uncomfortable with his success. Nevermind isn't they're only album! (Kurt even said he wanted to get past it). He always wanted a natural sound, as shown in In Utero. (Besides the remix of Heart-Shaped Box).

Listen to they're live album (From the muddy banks of the wiskah) or "Bleach" or Incesticide.
Yeah yeah, Kurt Cobain went on and on about how great underground music was it doesn't change the fact Nirvana was a band marketed and made for the radio. I've heard every Nirvana album, including the box set so don't go and tell me what I need to listen to to 'get it' or have an 'educated opinion'. Nirvana were the Motley Crue of the 90s.
