When you think about it, technical ability limits what you can possibly play. You might be able to think of a great melody in your head, but unless you can actually play it, you have a problem.
Of course, some people will never be limited by technical ability because what they want to play isn't difficult. In which case, technicality isn't as relevant to their playing style. But either way, technicality isn't useless. It's just less important for some people.

Meh. If a guitarist can get the same feeling across with a simple riff, rather than a grandiose solo, the minimalist wins.
