Um...they're psychedelic...and more influential than the Grateful Dead....Not hard to figure that one out.
1./2. On their own being a jam band and making complicated music would be irrevelant to greatness, but the fact that they made complicated music that fused rock, jazz, psychedelia, folk and many more genres make them unique and innovative.
3. This is a discussion of the greatness of a band, and having iconic status makes them 'greater'. That's just my opinion. I feel that artists like Madonna's pop culture status gives them a larger importance in the music world.
