Yeah I agree with that.
I think on reflection if we are all totally honest with ourselves the Who are probably the best live band ever. Certainly the first live band to do stadium rock.
I used to love "behind blue eyes" and still do but I've mellowed with age.
You could say the who were punk. I know your point about mods being american R&B.
Without wanting to sound in anyway patronising when you look at it rock n roll as we know it came about through black slavery and the artists that sang about what it was like. I really think that is true.
I mean all Rock n Roll. Inspired Elvis and the stones and the who and the Beatles etc etc and so on.
Watch the blues brothers when they go into Harlem or wherever to buy instruments!!! That is how it started.
But there are moments when a new era begins and all go that way. A signal post that changes the way we all go.
The Who definately made Hard Rock.
